Miles runs for Alzheimer’s Research UK

The managing director of Expert Labels Ltd, Miles Green, recently ran the Robin Hood Marathon for Dementia to boost funds for Alzheimer’s Research UK. He aimed to raise a couple of hundred pounds for the UK’s leading dementia research charity when he joined the crowd of runners pounding Nottingham’s streets.

Miles, 46, lives in Stowmarket with his wife and two boys. Along with being actively involved in the Air Training Corps, he owns a local company based in Bury St Edmunds. For over 20 years Miles has specialised in all things labelling and has recently rebranded the company, formerly known as Barcode Products Ltd to Expert Labels Ltd.

Miles explained his motivation for running the Robin Hood Marathon and supporting Alzheimer’s Research UK:
“Running a marathon was a goal I set myself to complete this year. I searched the internet and found the Nottingham run and decided to commit. Taking part in the Robin Hood Marathon gave me the ideal opportunity to raise much needed money for research into Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. The charity is very close to my heart as my mother was recently diagnosed with dementia.

“My work colleagues were impressed with my training but my wife Mayumi kept saying I need to do more preparation! To keep active I would regularly run half marathons and I also swam a few times a week. Staying fit and healthy is very important to me. The thought of doing a full length marathon was daunting but it’s nothing compared to what people with dementia are going through.

“Having a positive focus helped me complete the course. Alzheimer’s Research UK does an incredible job and it’s a real privilege to be involved in this way. With the crowds cheering and the thought of my wife and children waiting for me at the finish line, it was genuinely amazing!”

It is estimated that over 850,000 people in the UK are living with dementia today. Dementia poses one of the greatest threats to public health now and in the future but investment in research still lags far behind other serious diseases.

Miles finished the marathon in four and a half hours, raising nearly double what he expected to with over £420.

Three Tips to Keep Your Printer in Top Condition

No one printing more than a handful of labels a day would consider using anything other than a thermal printer such as Zebra, Intermec and Datamax. Thermal printers are fast, cheap to run, ideally suited to printing barcodes and extremely reliable, so much so, we’ve found ourselves working with printers more than ten years old.

Here are three things you can do to keep costs down, maintain quality and keep on printing:

Clean your printhead.

You MUST clean your printhead every time you change labels or ribbons. Labels leave an abrasive paste on your printhead which wears away the ceramic coating and eventually stops the printhead from working. Cleaning only takes a few seconds to do and will add years onto your printhead. Watch this 1 min 16 sec video from Zebra to see how. Click here for the youtube video. Call us on 01359 271 111 and ask for a FREE printhead cleaning pack.

Keep the temperature down.

Thermal printers use… heat to print with. The printhead melts the wax on the ribbon and an image appears. The higher the temperature, the faster the printhead burns out. You need to keep the printhead running as cool as possible. How do I reduce the print temperature? Open your label printing software and look under the page settings in the printer driver. Look for the darkness (or density) setting and experiment. Reduce the temperature to a point where it’s as low as possible to get quality print results. At the same time you can adjust the print speed. If you lower the print speed you can lower the printhead temperature.

Think Ribbon Width

Ribbons should overlap the labels by at least 3mm each side. Think of labels as being sandpaper. The printer ribbon provides the printhead with a soft plastic protection from the abrasive label material. Without that protection, the printhead will wear out where the label material is rubbing against the head. Call us on 01359 271 111 to find out what ribbon would suit you best.

Expert Labels Limited were known as Barcode Products until Octover 2015. We supply labels made from hundreds of different materials and thousands of different sizes. We understand label printing all the way through from choosing the best thermal printer, label design software to the best labels and ink combination designed to save your wallet as well as your printer.

Miles – Managing Director and Founder

Miles is the founder and Managing Director of Expert Labels Ltd, setting up the business selling labels and printers in 1994. Miles lived overseas for more than 15 years – first in New Zealand and then in Japan, but is now based in our Suffolk office.  Most exotic work location – Tonga in the Pacific ocean.

In Miles’ spare time, he enjoys spending quality time with his wife and two sons and is also actively involved in the RAF Air Cadets.  He enjoys travelling and is a regular and keen runner – having actually completed a marathon.

Piggyback label

PiggyBack Labels

Piggyback labels, sometimes known as dual-layer or two-layer labels, can be thought of as labels on top of labels.  They are made from combining two layers of adhesive label material. The bottom layer forms the backing for the top.

The ‘master-label’ can be stuck to any object as normal, the top layers (sub labels) can then be removed and be applied elsewhere.

Piggyback labels
Piggyback labels

You can use your thermal label printer to overprint your piggyback labels with barcodes or text, positioning each piece of text or barcode on one of the sub-labels.

This is useful where you have a ‘master object’ and lots of ‘sub objects’ that need the same identification.

Instructions for use can be added to the label and different sub-label text can ensure the correct sub-label has been attached to the correct item.

Uses for Piggyback Labels

Examples for where piggy back labels may be used:

  • Medical records – a patient record and sample labels – peel off a piggy back sub label for each sample.  They all share the same identification.
  • Museum artifacts.  Applied to components that make up a set.
  • Job tracking – each stage of the journey you remove a sub-label.
  • Tracking any process where you can remove a sub label at each stage in the process.
  • Shipment tracking – an external address label with a tracking code to go on items being returned.
  • Marketing – where you want to provide convenience for your clients.  Return address labels or identification labels are examples.

Piggyback labels can be made on a range of materials – paper or waterproof plastic, can be printed in colour and can be made to meet your sizes.

Peel and reveal labels

Peel and Reveal Labels

Peel and reveal labels (also known as Peel & Read labels) are multi-page labels that are lightly glued together – so the reader can peel off layers and read what’s underneath.  They are an information rich product label that contains everything the end user needs or might want to know.

Additionally, with labelling laws demanding more information, Peel & Reveal labels are the answer, enabling you to meet your legal obligations in the limited space you have available.   We can help you with the design and print of your labels – printing on digital or conventional presses – so you get value for money.

Our clients use peel and reveal labels to:

  • Display nutritional information,
  • Cooking instructions and recipes,
  • Multiple languages
  • Competition labels or
  • Health and safety information

– all contained in a small space.

Also known as peel off stickers or Peel & Read labels, these Peel and Reveal labels might be the only way you can label your small items while maintaining an attractive design that matches your brand.

Print up to 5 pages in your Peel & Reveal labels

Why do P&R labels cost what they do?

Read our article on how label are costed and what you can expect to pay for Peel & Reveal labels. Click here.

We’re able to print from three to five pages on your label. However, on a multipage (leaflet) style label, it is up to 35 pages.

There are a few limitations regarding printing and materials which we would need to discuss with you before you order.

Sustainable Peel & Reveal Labels

Peel & Reveal labels are not usually sustainable.  They need to be tear-proof so they are usually made from plastic, as opposed to paper.

It is possible to make Peel & Reveal labels from biodegradable and sustainable plastics, but this has certain limitations.

Tactile Warning Marks

Tactile Mark label
Tactile Triangle Mark on a Peel & Reveal Label

If your peel and reveal label needs tactile marks (triangle marks) printed on it, for example in the case of Vaping labels, press the sample request button and ask about our tactile peel and reveal labels.

These can be custom shaped marks that can be built into the design of your label.

Digitally Printing Your Peel & Reveal Labels

Using a digital press, we’re able to print relatively small numbers. However, where digital comes into it’s own is where you have many design changes.

For example, 200 of ten different designs would be well suited to digital printing. Printing the same on a traditional press would be very expensive.

Peel and Read competition labels

Competition Peel & read labels

Thinking of using peel and reveal labels for promotional use?

Using a digital press you can print unique codes onto your peel and reveal labels.  Let your customers know if they have won a prize, discount or a special offer.

The good thing about peel and reveal labels is that the code can be covered up and only revealed once the top layer has been peeled back.  Contact us and ask about promotional labels.

Overprinting the Top Layer of Your Peel & Reveal Labels

We can supply peel and reveal labels with a blank first page (for you to overprint with your own design).

These are perfect for Vape labels as the bottom layer with safety and ingredient information can stay the same and the top layer can be brightly printed.

However, you need a printer capable of printing from rolls of labels, as peel and reveal labels don’t lend themselves to being produced on sheets.

Check with us if you’re printing on a Primera, Epson Colorworks or Kairo colour printer (they print from rolls).  As always, you would need to test compatibility with your label printer.  Label materials are limited for these printers.

Visit our contact us page and call to find out more.

Labels for Laboratories

Click here to fill in our label quote form to tell us about the labels you need, or read this guide to the labels for laboratories we supply.

Laboratory Label Guide

This short guide will introduce you to our label range for biotechnology, agricultural, environmental and forensic laboratories.  These labels are used by healthcare, testing and research laboratories across the UK.   You have a choice from a wide range of specialist labels made for laboratories.

Label materials: paper, plastic, water soluble and direct thermal

Choosing the correct label material is the key to long life, readable labels.

  • Paper labels are the most cost effective label solution.  Designed for one off identification – but won’t survive significant contact with water or steam.
  • Plastic labels are more robust, designed to survive water content and provide clear text and barcodes.  If your labels are used with autoclaves, you will need plastic labels.  For sample that might come into contact with solvents, you will need a plastic label and ink combination that will not rub off.  Ask us what combination would work best with the solvents you use.
  • Direct thermal is perfect for labels with short label life and are not exposed to heat.  They eliminate the need for ink and can be printed with any thermal or thermal transfer printer.
  • Water-soluble labels are not found commonly in laboratories, but mean that all traces of labels can be removed from samples before being re-labelled.

Adhesives

Adhesives are the key to labels you can trust.  It’s the adhesive that survives contact with solvents, water, liquid nitrogen, freezers and all the extreme conditions encountered in laboratories.

  • Standard permanent adhesive are the most cost effective labels.  This is not a reliable adhesive for high temperatures or freezing.
  • Peelable adhesive is ideal for containers and samples that need to be reused.  If used with plastic labels you will be able to remove old identification labels quickly and easily, even if the sample gets wet.
  • Freezer adhesive comes in a range of specifications for labels rated down to -20, -40, -90 and cryogenic storage at -196

Ask for an adhesive that is tested to resist contact with a range of solvents – Xylene, Toluene, Alcohols, Acetone, Dimethyl Sulfoxide (DMSO), Methyl Ethyl Ketone (MEK) and Acrylonitrile (ACN).

Label sizes

With more than 6,000 label dies in our die library, we are able to provide you with a label that fits your situation exactly.  Combine these with the different label materials and adhesives we use and you’ll be confident that you’ll get the exact label you can trust.

Let us print your labels for you

If you need to uniquely identify your labels, but don’t want to invest in a high resolution printer, ask us to pre-print your identification codes.  You can use us for numerical or alphanumeric sequences or provide us with a database and we’ll print them for you.

Common Laboratory applications

Tube labels

Label on a conical tube
Laboratory Labels
These labels are made to stick to plastic and glass tubes, for temporary or permanent use.  Labels can be applied to the sides or tops of PCR and micro-centrifuge tubes.  Coloured dot or rectangular labels are available.  Whilst these labels are designed for thermal printers (so the ink doesn’t flake off) they can still be written on with the trusty marker pen.  Available in a range of freezable adhesives, which can remain stuck all the way down to -196.  Choose from labels that are made from waterproof plastic or paper that stick to most plastics and glass. With our plastic labels, your samples will remain identified after boiling water baths, standard freezing down to cryogenic freezer temperatures. They are resistant to most organic solvents, caustic agents without peeling, becoming brittle or degrading.

Slide labels

microscope slide
Microscope Slide
These labels have a coating which makes the information printed onto the labels clear and sharp.  Equally suitable for text and barcodes.  As with many of our labels, these labels come with a choice of solvent resistant or peelable adhesive.

Cryo tubes and Vials

Cryogenic Labels
Cryogenic Labels
Made from laser printer or thermal printable plastic materials with an adhesive that will not come off when stored at -196.  We have labels sized for vials, microscope slides, tubes, micro-centrifuge, microplanes and a wide range of containers used in long term bio-preservation in liquid nitrogen.

Laboratory Glassware Labels

Glassware Labels
Glassware Labels
Labels that can be peeled off for reuse with glassware – or permanent adhesives for long term storage and identification.  Come in a large range of sizes.  Labels made from flexible materials that stay attached to curved surfaces.

Conical centrifuge tube labels

Labels specially designed to be applied to glass or polypropylene conical tubes.  Label sizes to suit 5ml to 100ml.

Vial top labels

Circular labels that can withstand low temperature storage.  Either printed with identification details and high density 2D barcodes or coloured.

Multi-part laboratory labels

Multi-part labels with peel off sections are useful when you need to identify multiple samples with the same identification.  We carry a small number of these labels as stock, most are made to specification.

Straw labels

With straw labels typically being 5mm x 25mm, the label material needs to be soft and flexible to adapt to the tight curve of the straw.  Choose from a range of adhesives suitable for storage right down to -196.

Samples

As with all labels – we recommend you test a sample of label to make sure you can trust them under your laboratory conditions.  Click here to order your free sample pack.  Make sure to mention what conditions you intend to use your labels under.

Stock labels

Whilst we have a large number of labels in stock, ready for next day delivery, they will be most commonly used labels.  If you need a less commonly used combination of size, label material or adhesive we will be able to get it made.  Call us today on 01359 271 111 to find out how we can help you.

Labels for Food and Beverage Packaging

Food labels are the most commonly printed labels in the UK.  Food labels are not all the same, however.  Some are short-life labels for fresh food, others can remain attached to tinned food for years.  You might want simple identification or create an emotional connection to your brand through labelling.  Read on to learn about the different labels you might be using.

Colour labels

Colour says something about your labels.  Colour labels will be the kind that creates an emotional bond to your company.

For small quantities of colour labels, of fewer than 5,000 full colour paper labels, ask about our digital label service.  Competitively priced at around £250 (depending on label size and material used) for quantities of 1,000 to 5,000 labels, we have dozens label sizes to choose from.

If you need a very specific label size, then we can provide you with a custom made label (at extra cost).  Our digital labels are generally varnished to provide a high quality finish, that will make your label stand out and enhance your brand.

If you need label with gold and silver foil finishes or personalisation, ask us for a quote.

Label Designs

Do you need a design to go on the label to help your brand stand out? We have a design team who can create a bespoke label design for you.  Prices vary based on the complexity of the design and the stage you’ve reached in your ideas.  There are rules relating to barcode size, style and positioning that need to be taken into consideration.  To find out more click here.

Special Finishes

Embossed labels
Label Finishes

Colour adds a visual level of connection to your food products but there are other label features that make your brand more personal – using that most personal of senses – touch.

Embossing.

Using a special tool we can make areas of your labels stand out, literally.  Embossing is one method.

Embossed labels
Embossing

High Build Finishes

Circular High Build on a label
A circular area of High Build on a label.

Another technique to make your food labels feel special is using a thick varnish on parts of your labels that makes those parts higher than others.  When the varnish is coated in ink, your label will look and most importantly feel ‘outstanding’!

Both of these finishes need to be carefully planned and will add to the cost but will create a premium brand image.

Chilled Food Labels

Chilled foods are subject to moisture.  If your label is only expected to last a few days then a paper label will probably survive moisture.

Consider a clear varnish to give it a little more moisture resistance.

Talk to us about how you’ll print variable product information on your labels – such as batch codes, best before dates and variable weights.  This sort of information is best printed with a direct thermal printer (learn more about direct thermal by clicking here) and needs a special thermal coating to print onto.

If your label is going to need to last longer than a few days ask us about plastic labels that are waterproof.

One of the main requirement for labels suitable for chilled foods is the label adhesive. Click the Request a Sample button on this page and mention in the comments that you’d like to test a label suitable for  damp conditions.

Similar to our freezer friendly labels, we can supply labels suitable for a refrigerated environment, ensuring your label stays intact and legible.

Frozen Food Labels

Adhesives are not designed for sub zero temperatures.  When they freeze they solidify and lose their stickiness.  Make sure you ask us for freezer adhesive labels.

We can help you with labels that are suitable for frozen foods that can withstand temperatures of  -40 degrees Celsius and therefore suitable for all types of freezer conditions.

Peel & Reveal labels

If space is at a premium on your packaging, but regulations dictate that you need to add mandatory information – consider Peel and Reveal labels.

Two (or more layers) are printed and the consumer is able to peel off the top layer to reveal more information.  This example image (above) isn’t a food label – but your labels could easily include recipes or competition entry details.

Click here to read more about peel and reveal labels – or click the sample request button and request peel & reveal labels.
